Colds and flus may be common, but their real cost on businesses and the overall economy is extraordinary. Promoting a healthy work environment is essential in the workplace. We wanted to share these statistics to enlighten Americans so that they can have a better understanding of how important it is to stay well not only in terms of staying physically healthy, but in terms of financial health.
The economic impact of colds and flus is at or above that of many chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, asthma, osteoporosis and migraine. While the total economic impact of colds (@ $40 billion) adds up to $127 per person, per year, the cost of flus clocked in at just under $200 per worker in 2012-2013. Fortunately, these costs can be mitigated. The concept behind providing this information is to understand how colds and flus impact us economically and inspire a healthier lifestyle for all Americans.
